One language, several markets

Latin America SEO starts with the size of each market. Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Chile and Peru add up to 240.5 million internet users according to DataReportal’s Digital 2026 reports, and Google handles between 88% and 94% of searches in each of them (StatCounter, September 2026). The language is shared, and the search vocabulary changes from one country to the next.

  1. Computerordenador in Spain, computadora across Latin America (Diccionario de la lengua española, RAE and ASALE).
  2. Cell phonemóvil in Spain, celular in the Americas.
  3. Avocadoaguacate in Mexico, palta in Argentina, Chile, Peru and Uruguay.

A food brand that only targets aguacate misses four countries, and an electronics store built around ordenador portátil will struggle in Mexico. That is why we research keywords country by country before writing a single page.

Choosing the site structure

  1. Country domainsa .mx or .com.ar domain sends the clearest country signal, at the cost of one site to build, host and grow per country.
  2. Subfolders/mx/ or /ar/ on your main domain is the easiest to run and shares its authority, with a weaker country signal in the URL.
  3. URL parametersGoogle does not recommend them for country versions.
  4. Automatic redirects by IPGoogle advises against them. Link the versions to each other and let people choose.

These are the trade-offs Google lists in its guide to managing multi-regional sites. Most brands entering Latin America start with subfolders and move a market to its own domain when it grows.

hreflang that Google accepts

Each country version needs its own hreflang tag with a language and a country code, such as es-MX, es-CO or es-AR, and every version has to list itself and all the others. Google’s documentation on localized versions states that codes outside ISO 639-1 and ISO 3166-1, such as es-419 for Latin American Spanish, are not supported, and that it detects the language of a page from its visible content.

When it is not the right service

If your customers are Spanish speakers living in the US, our Spanish SEO service builds a bilingual site for the US market.

If you also need the country sites built, see web development from Argentina: we design and develop them with the hreflang and structure already in place.

How we take a brand into a new market

One market at a time, with the same report format for all of them.

  1. Market review

Search demand, competitors and the pages that rank in each target country, before deciding the order of markets.

  2. Structure

Domains or subfolders, hreflang map, language selector and redirects, planned with your developers or built by us.

  3. Localized content

Pages written natively for each country, with local vocabulary, currency and contact details.

  4. Reporting

Monthly rankings, traffic and leads per country, in English, plus mentions in AI answers in Spanish.

Latin America SEO: common questions

What brands ask before entering Latin American search.

Can one neutral Spanish version cover all of Latin America?

It can be a starting point for low-competition topics. For competitive products the vocabulary, prices and trust signals change by country, so the markets that matter most get their own version.

Which variant of Spanish should I use for a neutral version?

We write a neutral Latin American Spanish that avoids words specific to Spain or to a single country, and we check every main keyword in the markets you target.

Do I need separate strategies for Spain and Latin America?

Yes. Spain uses different vocabulary and conventions, and Google treats es-ES and es-MX pages as different versions. We plan Spain as its own market.

Should I use country domains or subfolders?

Subfolders on your main domain are faster to launch and share authority. Country domains send a stronger local signal and need more investment. Google lists both options with their trade-offs.

Can I use es-419 in hreflang?

No. Google’s documentation says codes such as es-419 are not supported. Use a language plus a country, such as es-MX, or plain es for a generic Spanish version.

Will hreflang alone improve my rankings in Mexico?

Hreflang only tells Google which version to show to whom. Rankings come from localized content, local links and a technically sound site.
