Start here: not sure how GEO differs from AEO and AIO? Read SEO vs AIO vs AEO vs GEO: What Actually Changes first.
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the work of making your content the material that AI-generated summaries are built from: the paragraph inside a Google AI Overview, the sources listed under a Perplexity answer, the brands a chatbot recommends. It sits on top of solid SEO, and it costs more than SEO alone because it adds entity work, citation building and ongoing monitoring. This guide gathers the ranges agencies actually publish for GEO in 2026, so you know what to expect before you ask for a quote. It completes our pricing series alongside AI search optimization cost and AEO pricing.
The short answer
GEO retainers published in 2026 start around $1,000 to $2,500 per month for entry programs, sit mostly between $2,500 and $8,000 for programs that do real content and entity work, and reach $10,000 to $25,000 or more for enterprise scopes. A one-time audit is typically $1,500 to $5,000.

What you are paying for
GEO is not one deliverable. One published breakdown stacks it in layers, and the price climbs as you move up:
| Layer | Published range | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Technical foundation | $2,000–$2,500 one-time, or about $750/month | Crawler directives, sitemap and IndexNow setup, schema deployment. |
| Content optimization | $2,500–$4,000/month | Answer-ready passages, expert review, evidence and structured data. |
| GEO and entity building | $3,500–$8,000/month | Entity and knowledge-graph work, press co-citation, community signals such as Reddit. |
| LLM seeding and prompt auditing | $4,000–$8,000/month | Co-citation outreach, prompt audits tracked across five or more platforms, competitive reporting. |
Source for the layers: Fuel Online. Its full-stack programs, combining all four, run from $8,000 to $35,000 per month.
GEO on top of SEO: the add-on view
If you already pay for SEO, the honest comparison is the increment. One guide cites agencies adding roughly 20% to 30% of the current monthly recurring fee when GEO is folded into an existing SEO retainer and puts traditional SEO itself at $1,500 to $8,000 or more per month. GEO usually costs more than SEO because it adds layers of interpretation: how AI systems read your business, match questions and summarize your content, and what entity signals back you up (see Young Company).
Audits and content: the smaller line items
| Item | Published range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard AI visibility audit | $1,500–$2,500 | Testing across three or four AI platforms with schema validation. |
| Comprehensive audit | $3,000–$5,000 | 50+ query tests, benchmarking against five to ten competitors, custom GPT testing. |
| One-time build (one provider) | $4,995 | Entity and schema graph, answer pages and 45 days of citation tracking, delivered in about 10 working days. |
| Content, basic AI-assisted | $400–$600 per piece | Volume discounts of 20–30% are quoted for 12-piece monthly packages. |
| Content, premium with original research | $800–$1,200 per piece | Typically 1,500–2,000 words. |
Sources: Fisher Design and Advertising for audits and content, and HouseOfMVPs for the one-time build and a published ladder of $2,000, $3,500 and $6,500 per month (maintenance, growth, authority).
What moves the price
- Website size and technical debt. Cleaning up schema and structure on a large legacy site is real work.
- Competitive intensity. Getting cited where five strong competitors already are costs more than a quiet niche.
- Platforms monitored. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and AI Overviews are separate surfaces to track.
- Content volume. Four pages a month and twelve pages a month are different budgets.
- Digital PR and citation building. Earning mentions off your own site is the most labor-intensive part.
How long GEO takes to pay back
Expect a slow start. Retainers are often sold with six to twelve month commitments, and because work stops when billing stops, the useful question is whether the deliverables survive the contract: schema, restructured pages and entity signals stay with your site, while monitoring and outreach do not. Ask which is which before you sign.
Questions to ask before you buy GEO
- Which deliverables stay on my site if I stop the retainer?
- How many prompts and platforms do you track, and how often do I see the results?
- Is GEO priced as an add-on to my SEO, and what is the increment?
- Who reviews the content before it goes live?
- What do you not promise? Guaranteed citations are a red flag.
Where to start
For most businesses the sensible order is: fix the technical foundation, run an audit to see where you stand in AI answers today, then fund the content and entity work that closes the biggest gap. To scope it for your site, talk to us, or read about our GEO service and the GEO glossary entry.
