“How much does SEO cost?” has an unsatisfying answer because the honest one is a range that spans two orders of magnitude. This guide uses published survey data instead of agency marketing to show what providers actually charge, what changes the price and how to tell a fair quote from an expensive one.
The short answer
Most businesses that hire an SEO provider pay between $1,000 and $2,500 per month. Agencies average around $3,200 per month in one large provider survey, freelancers around $1,350 and local SEO work sits lower, near $1,550. One-off projects most often land between $1,000 and $5,000.

The three pricing models
| Model | Typical range | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly retainer | $500–$5,000+ per month | Ongoing work: content, links, technical upkeep and reporting. The most common model. |
| Hourly | $50–$200+ per hour | Audits, advice and small fixes. Survey averages run about $75 mid-level, $130 senior and $180 expert in the US, UK and Australia. |
| Project | $1,000–$10,000+ | A defined deliverable such as an audit, a migration or a site restructure. The most common band is $1,000–$5,000. |
What providers charge per hour
Hourly rates track experience. Entry-level providers with one to three years behind them typically charge $50 or less; the mid-level band is $50 to $100; senior specialists charge $101 to $150 and experts with seven or more years charge $151 to $200 and up. The Ahrefs survey behind OuterBox’s summary found an overall average near $111 per hour, with the most common band at $100 to $150.
What actually drives the price
- Website size and complexity. Providers rated this the strongest factor. A 20-page site and a 20,000-page store are different jobs.
- How competitive your market is. Ranking for “plumber in a small town” costs less than ranking for “project management software.”
- Who does the work. Agencies charge roughly 30% more than freelancers in Backlinko’s data, and US-based providers cost several times more than those in emerging markets.
- Scope. Technical fixes only, or technical plus content plus link building plus reporting.
- The starting point. A site with crawl errors, thin pages or a past penalty needs cleanup before growth work can start.
How to read a quote
- Ask for deliverables per month in numbers: pages written, fixes shipped, reports delivered.
- Be careful with rock-bottom prices. A $300 monthly package usually means a template applied the same way to every client.
- Do not accept ranking guarantees. Nobody controls Google. Promises of “page one in 30 days” are a warning sign.
- Look for month-to-month terms. Long lock-ins protect the provider more than they protect you.
- Ask how AI search fits in. Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT now shape which brands get seen; a 2026 quote should say whether that work is included.
How this compares with our own pricing
We publish our packages instead of hiding them: SEO fundamentals start in the mid hundreds per month, a combined SEO and AI visibility program sits in the low thousands, and a full ecosystem program runs higher. The current ranges are on our pricing page. If you want to see which tier fits your site, talk to us, or read about our SEO services and what AI search optimization costs.
