AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)

Optimizing content so that answer engines and assistants quote it directly when they respond.

How it works

An answer engine returns a response rather than a list of links: Google’s AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Claude and voice assistants. AEO is the work of being the source it draws that response from.

In practice that means structuring content so a passage can be lifted cleanly: a direct answer in the first sentence under a question-shaped heading, facts stated once and unambiguously, and structured data that names the entities involved.

The uncomfortable part is that a successful AEO result often produces no click. The visitor gets their answer inside the engine. What it produces instead is citation and brand presence at the moment of decision, which is worth measuring differently from sessions.

AEO vs SEO vs GEO

DisciplineMain goalWhat success looks likeMain levers
SEORank pages in search resultsPositions, clicks and organic trafficTechnical health, content quality and links
AEOBe the passage an engine quotesFeatured snippets, AI Overview citations, voice answersQuestion-shaped headings, direct answers, structured data
GEOBe named and described correctly in generated answersAccurate brand mentions in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and CopilotConsistent entity data, third-party mentions, clear service pages

AEO sits between the two: it still depends on pages that rank, and it feeds the sources generative engines read. See the GEO glossary entry and the full SEO vs AIO vs AEO vs GEO comparison.

A real example from our own site

Our Spanish article on Answer Engine Optimization pricing appears in position 3 on Google for “cuánto cuesta una auditoría aeo” (how much does an AEO audit cost), according to Search Console data from October 2026. The page is recent and the site has little authority yet, so the position comes mostly from format.

The article answers the question in the first lines, uses headings phrased the way people ask, gives price ranges with their sources and a review date, and keeps each range in a single, easy-to-quote sentence. Those are the same signals an answer engine looks for when it chooses which passage to show.

How to optimize a page for answer engines, step by step

  • List the questions your customers actually ask, using Search Console queries, sales calls and the “People also ask” box.
  • Give each important question its own heading, phrased as the question.
  • Answer in the first one or two sentences under that heading, then expand with detail, examples and exceptions.
  • State each fact once, with numbers and dates, and link the source when the figure is not yours.
  • Add structured data that matches the page: Organization, Service, FAQPage or HowTo where they genuinely apply.
  • Keep your brand data consistent across the site, Google Business Profile and directories, so engines can attribute the answer to you.
  • Check the result by asking the same questions in Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot every month and noting who gets cited.

How to measure AEO

Because many AEO wins produce no click, sessions alone undercount them. Track impressions and positions for question-shaped queries in Search Console, featured snippets and AI Overview citations for your priority questions, branded search volume over time, and referral sessions from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot in GA4, which already show up as traffic sources on our own site.

When it matters for your business

AEO matters most when your buyers research before they contact anyone: professional services, B2B, health, finance, travel and any purchase where people compare prices or ask “how much does it cost”. If your customers ask questions before they buy, an engine is already answering them, and the only open point is whose content it quotes. Our AEO service starts with that list of questions.

Common mistakes

  • Burying the answer under a long introduction, so the engine finds a cleaner one elsewhere.
  • Adding FAQ schema to questions the page does not actually answer in visible text.
  • Stating the same fact differently on different pages, which makes the brand harder to quote with confidence.
  • Judging AEO only by clicks and dropping it when sessions do not grow right away.
  • Optimizing for one engine only. Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot read different sources: Copilot answers from Bing and Claude’s web search uses Brave, so the same questions should be checked in all of them.

AEO: common questions

We answer the most common questions about our services

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO aims to rank a page in the list of results. AEO aims to have a specific passage of that page quoted as the answer. Good SEO is usually a precondition for AEO, since engines tend to quote pages that already rank.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

They overlap. AEO focuses on being the quoted answer to a specific question. GEO focuses on how generative engines describe your brand and whether they recommend it at all.

How long does AEO take to show results?

Format changes on pages that already rank can show up in featured snippets and AI Overviews within weeks of being recrawled. New pages need to rank first, which usually takes months.

Can a small business compete in AEO?

Yes. Answer engines quote the clearest answer, and a small site with direct, well-sourced answers to specific questions can be quoted ahead of larger sites with vaguer content.
