Featured snippet

A short answer Google lifts from a page and shows above the organic results, with a link back to the source.

Sometimes called position zero. It is drawn from a page already ranking on the first page, so it is won by formatting rather than by outranking.

What earns one is a direct answer placed immediately under a heading that matches the question, in the shape the query implies: a paragraph for a definition, a list for a process, a table for a comparison.

Its value has become ambiguous. It wins visibility and it is the strongest predictor of being quoted in an AI Overview, but it also answers many searches completely, so it can raise impressions while reducing clicks.
