If you serve customers in a specific city or region, local search decides a lot of your pipeline. The best public dataset on what drives it is Whitespark‘s Local Search Ranking Factors report, built from a survey of local SEO practitioners. Here is what its 2026 edition puts on top, and what to do with it.

What matters most in local organic results
For the regular blue-link results with a local intent, the same report ranks a dedicated page per service first (210 points), followed by geographic keyword relevance (190), inbound link quality (187), keywords in the landing page title (179) and industry-relevant domain links (175).
And AI search?
Whitespark also scored factors for AI visibility and notes that citations are back: three of the top five factors are citation-related. It also reports that review and behavioral signals gained importance this year, while on-page and link signals dropped a bit. These are survey-based opinions of experts, collected outside Google, so treat them as a strong hint.
A practical checklist
- Pick the most precise primary category on your Google Business Profile, and add secondary ones only where they are true.
- Use your real business name. Stuffing keywords into it can get the listing suspended.
- Build one page per service, and one per city if you serve several, each with unique content.
- Keep your name, address and phone identical across directories and citations.
- Ask for reviews continuously and reply to them.
- Keep your hours accurate, including holidays.
