Local SEO
The part of SEO that decides whether a business appears when someone searches with a place, or with intent to visit.
Local search behaves differently from ordinary search in one decisive way: proximity is a ranking factor. The same query typed ten blocks apart returns different businesses, which means there is no single position to report and no single page to optimise.
Most local queries resolve in the map pack, the block of three business listings above the ordinary results, and most of those end without a website visit at all. Someone calls, asks for directions or reads the reviews and decides. That makes the Google Business Profile the primary asset and the website the supporting one, which is the reverse of the usual arrangement.
The website still matters, in one specific way: a page for the area, written about that area. What it must not be is fifty copies of the same paragraph with the neighbourhood swapped in, which search engines have been demoting since the Panda update in 2011.
